Residential Painting in Washington, MI: Choosing the Right Paint and Finish

In this article, we share some tips on how to choose the most appropriate paint and paint finish for your project in Washington, MI.

So let’s get right into it, shall we?

Choosing the Right Product.

There are several big brands in the market, and of course, all of these brands have different product lines.

You already know that for the best results, choosing a high-end product is always a winning solution, but first, you have to make sure that you choose the right product for the right use.

It is advisable to apply a good coat of primer to the walls. There are different types, whether for new walls or walls that have already been painted.

For the latter, the application of a primer is not negligible if the initial color is very dark and difficult to cover.
If your walls are covered with oil paint, and you want to paint with water-based paint, you must apply a primer to ensure the adhesion of the new product.

There are “two in one” paints on the market. The big advantage of these products is that you save the primer step and go straight to painting.
These products are usually effective, but I suggest them mostly for new surfaces.
For previously painted surfaces, this type of paint will have less adhesion.
So the application of a higher quality primer often guarantees better results.

The big advantage of 100% acrylic products is that they are very durable, and most importantly, easily washable.
It may be wise to choose this type of product for children’s rooms or places with more traffic, such as entryways and hallways.

Recycled products can be a very good choice, both environmentally and economically. However, depending on the color choice, they have a little less hiding power.

Due to new environmental standards, residential oil paints have virtually disappeared from the market.
However, there are alkyd-based paints that give similar results. They are mainly used to paint cabinets or woodwork.

There are specific products for more humid rooms, such as bathrooms, for example. These paints are easily washable and are usually anti-mold.

What finish?

Choosing the finish of your paint is an important step because it will have different roles to play, whether it is to be easily washable, anti-mold, or simply to camouflage imperfections.

Ceilings are always the most exposed to the natural light entering the house, which shows even the slightest flaw, so a matte finish is required.
Apply the paint with a 15mm roller, which will facilitate application and give a more porous finish.

For walls, the velvety finish is the most frequently used. Also called “eggshell” it’s just glossy enough to be easily washable.
For smooth walls, it is advisable to use a 10 mm roller.

For doors and woodwork, a pearl finish is the best option. It has the advantage of being easily washable, and its luster brings out the finishing details.

What color?

In general, the darker the color you choose, the greater the hiding power.
But the rule does not necessarily apply to all shades.
Bright colors like red, yellow, or light green, for example, are made up of organic dyes, which makes the product more translucent.
It is then advisable to apply a tinted primer to increase the covering power.

For a more colonial or country look, choose the same color for the moldings, the doors, and the ceilings.
And for a more contemporary style, hide the frames, baseboards, and doors using the same color as the walls.
